Purpose The purpose of the conference is to promote the Earth Charter and the National Councils of Sustainable Development (NCSDs) in the Asia Pacific Region. The Earth Charter is an integrated ethical framework for promoting a more sustainable way of living. National Councils of Sustainable Development are national based multi-stakeholder forums, established in over 70 countries, linked to the Earth Charter and promoting the principles of sustainable development. 2. Objectives The objectives of the conference will be to Provide practical examples of the application of the Earth Charter in government, business and civil society; Promote commitment to the Earth Charter as an international covenant by civil society, government and business/industry in the Asia Pacific region; Promote National Councils of Sustainable Development in the Asia Pacific region; Contribute to Asia Pacific Region input to Rio + 10; Seek endorsement of the Earth Charter as a guiding framework for NCSDs and Sustainable Development; and Work towards the endorsement of the Earth Charter by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002. By gathering people from civil society, government and business throughout the Asia Pacific region, we hope to focus on key sustainability issues and share relevant experiences and projects using the ethical framework provided by the Earth Charter to promote a more sustainable way of living. The Asia-Pacific conference will help forge the global partnerships necessary in this region to enable economic, social, and ecological sustainable goals to be achieved. The conference will bring together key regional players and organisations with leaders of the Earth Charter Commission to examine critical regional sustainability concerns in light of the Earth Charter as an inclusive and decisive definition of sustainable living. From this conference strong networks and positive strategies can be articulated. 3. Conference Themes The conference themes will focus on the four main principles of the Earth Charter:
1. Respect and care for the community of life 2. Ecological integrity 3. Social and economic justice 4. Democracy, non-violence, and peace. These themes will be presented and explored in an integrated way through the agendas of civil society, government and business, and in conjunction with the triple bottom line approach. Environmental issues to be addressed include greenhouse emissions, use of energy, salinity, bio-diversity, endangered habitats and species, and oceans |
