IN OBSERVANCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2005
Symposium on Empowerment of Youth for Sustainable Development
Date: 12 August 2005, 6th International Youth Day.
Venue: National Youth Centre, Dhaka.
International Youth Day. The idea came from youth NGOs which proposed such a Day at the first World Youth Forum of the United Nations System in 1991 in Vienna! It was proclaimed by the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in 1998 in Lisbon which agreed on the date of 12 August when the Lisbon Declaration on Youth Policies and Progammes was adopted. And last year, it was finally endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 54/120. It took nine years for a recommendation of the first World Youth Forum to come into reality.
The main topics of the symposium: 1. What is real youth participation? 2. How can one involve young people at a national level? 3. Which are the barriers to youth empowerment in developing countries? 4. What is the role of the Youth Ministry in overcoming the barriers to youth empowerment process?
The symposium will address the issues of concern and the meaningful participation of young people at the community, national, regional and international levels.
The meaningful participation of youths requires the provision of opportunities to access existing decision-making processes. It also requires creative approaches and support to find new means of bringing young people together so that we may first enter into dialogue among themselves in order to best develop their capacities to contribute to these decision-making processes, as well as finding common areas of concern and agreed solutions.
