2005 Annual Meeting: Beyond Brundtland
The classic understanding of sustainable development, derived from the 1987 Brundtland Report, calls for development that aims to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Although this definition provides a necessary introduction, the reality of implementing sustainable development is difficult. Given the complexity and the scope of sustainable development, it has become apparent that the more we learn, the greater the challenge of sustainable development will seem; however, we, as students, must embrace the challenge of educating ourselves, and each other, as a means to develop an invaluable knowledge base.

At the 2005 Annual Meeting, we hope to develop this knowledge base by sharing student experiences in research, learning, and grassroots efforts related to sustainable development. While discovering the means to successfully implement sustainable development, we will discuss the ethical dilemmas posed by technological decisions and policies that involve competing human, environmental, and economic interests. Shared experiences combined with reflective thinking will provide us the means to answer a difficult question: How do we, the generations of tomorrow, move beyond Brundtland?

Call for Papers/Posters

All students are encouraged to submit papers and posters for presentation at the 2005AM. We are seeking papers and posters which emphasize progressive ideas that will help students to understand the challenges related to shifting paradigms of development to achieve sustainability. The following questions are included only to give students an idea of possible topics. There are many topics suitable for paper and poster submissions that lie outside the scope of these questions.

+ What are the ethical implications of abortion?
+ How will we meet the growing need for clean water?
+ What is the state of technology in the developing world?
+ How can environmental values be incorporated the free market system?
+ Can Natural Disasters be avoided?
