| This initiative is a collaborative between the World Health Organization and the Safe Communities Foundation. The people of the Rainy River District invite you to celebrate how this Canadian Region has put together a regional safety plan covering 16,000 square kilometres encompassing 23,000 citizens. This grassroots group set out to change the lifestyles and work practices of all of its citizens to improve the quality of their lives and that of their families. Through various initiatives, the citizens began by targeting moter vehicle and off-road vehicle accidents involving children and adult males, suicide in children and adults, workplace accidents, and falls of the elderly. You can learn how a cultural revolution in safety began and continues today with citizen groups, industry, and education built on these initial steps. Participants will learn of programs that address suicide, substance abuse, and other self-destructive behaviour from preschool to seniors. The Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition has 14 different programs at work in the district right now, which deal with education and training, elderly issues, law enforcement, family and school safety, farm and rural issues and many more. These programs target all age groups because everyone has the right to live free from injury. We are also having a pre-conference day that is dedicated completely to youth ages 18-29. There will be 150 youth from both local, national and international places that will come together and talk about issues that are important for safety for youth. There will be youth key note speakers there and it will be a very exciting day. This is the first time a youth component has ever been added to the WHO Conference. We are hoping to have 450 delegates from all over the world attend the conference from such groups as practitioners, researchers and interest groups of health, justice, public security, municipalities, rehabilition, urban planning etc. This is a very big deal in our small district of 24,000 people. The conference them is SEEDS which stands for Safety, Education, Equal Opportunity, Dedication and Sustainability. An initiative containing these ingredients will succeed when put into motion. |
