YOUNG PEOPLE change the world!
The fourth annual
International Summer School for young activists
5th to 13th July 2005
at Mahindra United World College, Pune, India
Partners – Pravah, CYDA, ‘Young people change the world’
We are inviting young people (not older than 25 years of age) and groups of young members from youth organizations (with or without a youth leader) to join us at the “YOUNG PEOPLE change the world!” summer school.
The Summer School will give you an opportunity to discuss issues, share ideas, enhance your practical skills, make contacts and develop collaborations with other youth activists. You will then become part of a network that will continue beyond the Summer School.
The Summer School will bring together 175 young people from around 40 countries – all of whom are interested in helping create a better world. Many among them have started, or are working with organizations that are led by young people to address issues that are of concern for the youth. We encourage the participation of young social entrepreneurs who have been making a difference in their community.
The Summer School is run by young people for young people. The programme consists of
§ skill workshops (fundraising, advocacy, communication – theatre, film making, photography, puppetry etc.)
§ theme workshops and discussions (a different theme for each day – human rights, peace and conflict resolution, globalization and livelihood, gender equity, HIV/AIDS and sexuality, environment and sustainable development).
Participants will be encouraged to work with others on a practical project during the summer school and present their learnings on the final day.
Of course it won’t be all work and no play. There will be fun events too! These include film screenings, an international night, an open mike night, song and dance-India style and adventure related activities. In the past, over 70% of participants have rated the event as “Excellent”. Summer School 2005 will strive to be even better!
Participants interested in staying on in India (for a period of 10 days to a month) thereafter would be encouraged and will have the option of volunteering with an NGO. We can accommodate 10-15 such volunteers and will need to be informed as early as possible. While we will be happy to make the necessary arrangements with the NGO concerned, the cost of the stay will have to be borne by the participants.
The Summer School is designed to ensure hands on participation and optimal engagement of all participants. There will be several opportunities for all to present their work and ideas, and forge partnerships to take ideas forward in other parts of the world.
The summer school is run as a non-profit venture. We, therefore approach funding agencies to raise resources for the initiative. With the aim of encouraging participation from the developing world, we subsidize the costs of participants from the South Asian, African, South American, West Asian and East European regions. Below are the participation fees for participants:
1. For those applying from the U.K - £195 per person
2. For those applying from the U.S, Canada, Australia, New Zealand - USD 295 per person
3. For those applying from European Union – Euros 275 person
4. For those from the developing countries – there would be a dual pricing structure
a) Rs 3500 or 72 USD per person if the participant is paying for her/himself
b) Rs 6900 or 140 USD per person if an organization is funding the participation
The participation fees mentioned above include full board, lodging and internal travel in Pune.
Young people can register as individual participants, or as a small group of 3-5 people (which can also include a project worker from your organization). You will be responsible for making your travel and visa arrangements. We will make arrangements for your stay and internal travel once you arrive in Pune. We will also be happy to organize accommodation in Pune before and after for Rs 250-500 per night. Bursaries will be available for a limited number of participants.
The “YOUNG PEOPLE change the world!” initiative is spreading. And we are encouraging this. In 2004, an event was held in Nairobi. Moving forward, we are hoping to develop linked events all over the world that are run by young people – some with special themes such as responding to conflict; some to develop specific skills such as advocacy; some targeted at young people in particular regions (South Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, etc.).
To get a flavour of the Summer School, here is some feedback that we received from previous participants:
“The international exchanges were the main benefits. People from Cameroon or Ghana or Kosovo were listening with surprise to the things that the UK participants were sharing about gender problems and youth sexual health crisis. And participants were able to find strong common themes/experiences while also listening to differences.”
“You created an incredible atmosphere and in the face of so many challenges created an amazing event. It is incredible to have been part of such an event.”
“It was great to meet dynamic, amazing, inspiring young people from around the world! It would be great to have some workshops run by young people themselves for information sharing/project ideas. Great that some young people did run workshops.”
“My time at the Summer School was phenomenal. I had the opportunity to talk with the world, dance with the world, debate with the world, laugh with the world, share cigarettes with world (I couldn't leave that out as some of my best moments were because of a cigarette!), cry with the world - all in 5 days!!! I felt the summer school was a fantastic exchange between 300 young people with the opportunity to work on ideas. Thank you!”:
“The experience on a whole was excellent, crew were exceptionally very friendly and funny - well done!”
“If there is any one person whose attendance in last year's summer school has impacted his work in project management, leadership and organizational capacity building, that person is me. After my participation in last year's summer school, I developed all these skills. As a result, I was recently elected at the UNEP Governing Council meeting in Nairobi as the UNEP Youth Advisor, Africa Region. Added to this I have (alongside with 4 others) won the World Bank/GEF fellowship. This particular news comes with great joy. I just had to put many of the proposal writing skills we learnt at the last summer school into practice while writing the proposal. And it worked!”
Who should apply?
The summer school is targeted at young people and youth organizations who are serious about making a contribution towards social, environmental and development problems and issues that face their communities, their country or the wider world.
You may already have set up an organization, or been involved in a project or you might want to get started. Either way, the summer school will provide you with the opportunity to gain new skills and to gain energy and enthusiasm to do so. Moreover it will link you with young people from around the world who share many of your ideas for a better world.
