School of Diplomacy and International Relations
This unique program will be offered twice in the summer of 2002. Session I is from May 20 to May 24; session II is from June 10 to June 14.
The program, designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, immerses participants in the political dynamics of the United Nations from an insider's view. Participants will sit in on official United Nations meetings and attend briefings at the United Nations Association and the United States Mission to the UN.
Program sessions will be taught by a diverse and experienced set of instructors. Led by Dr. Courtney Smith, of the School of Diplomacy, and Suzanne DiMaggio, Senior Advisor at UNA-USA, students will interact with a number of high-level diplomatic practitioners. Past speakers at School of Diplomacy events include Ambassadors from more than twenty-five countries and officials from nearly every UN department, including Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Each session offers two enrollment options: credit and noncredit. Successful completion of either option results in a certificate from the School of Diplomacy. The credit option also offers participants the opportunity to earn three semester hour credits from Seton Hall University.
Participants will be expected to read a packet of briefing materials provided before the program begins. During the program, participation is expected in all sessions and each student will offer a short individual presentation. Those who select the credit option must also keep a journal of their reactions to the briefings and submit a research paper one month after the program ends. Graduate students will complete extra readings and an additional writing assignment.
LOGISTICS
Participants will be involved in program activities all day, every day for the entire week of the program. Each morning begins with breakfast at Seton Hall, followed by a chartered bus to the United Nations. Program sessions will continue throughout the day in New York, with lunch provided most days. Some evenings will include dinner meetings on campus, and others will allow for free time in New York City.
Participants can commute to Seton Hall during the program, but on-campus housing in single rooms with an adjoining bath is also available, Sunday night to Friday night.
