PROGRAMME
The Summer School will be held over 5 days in August 2002 and is being hosted by Atlantic College, which is an international 6th form college and part of United World Colleges. This is situated in a castle overlooking the Severn Estuary in South Wales. There will be around 300 participants including adults from participating organisations. A Planning Group consisting of seven young people and a wider e-group for consultation is developing the programme. The programme will include:
Presentations by the young people on the projects they have been involved with. These presentations will be prepared before the Summer School.
Skills-building workshops related to global and local action, including on communications, fundraising, campaigning, use of IT and personal development.
Workshops on the five broad themes of the Summer School: Human Rights, Environment, Living in a Global World, Social Justice and Health.
Keynote talks.
Project work, with participants presenting their project work on the final day.
Recreational and fun activities.
PARTNERS
The Summer School is being organised as an initiative of the International Year of Volunteers by Atlantic College and the Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Action, in association with Changemakers and Community Champions.
ATTENDANCE
The Summer School is open to young people aged 16 upwards and youth workers and programme directors from organisations working with young people in different countries. We hope to have participation from a wide range of countries, and we have already received expressions of interest from:
South Asia: India
Africa: Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe
Eastern Europe: Moldova, Romania, Poland
Middle East: Jewish and Arab groups from Israel
Europe: UK and Eire
Rest of the world: USA, Canada and Australia
We are planning for 300 people (raised from our original target of 200) and have pre-registration expressions of interest from 150 people so far. Participant fees are £100 per person (not including travel to the venue) and £200 for accompanying adults from the UK. We are working on raising bursary funds to bring over groups from Africa, South Asia and Eastern Europe, although many of the overseas participants will be able to raise some or all of the funds they need in their own countries.
OTHER ASPECTS
1. Website. A website is being developed that will link the young people and organisations attending the Summer School, and which will provide a mechanism for continuing contact and collaboration after the Summer School.
2. Manual. A practical How-to-organise-a-Project manual is being developed for the Summer School, and funding has been promised for design and production.
3. Continuing contact. We are building into our planning the possibility of facilitating exchanges and shared training between participants beyond the Summer School.
4. Further events. We will be developing proposals for a repeat workshop in 2003, and that the event becomes a regular event at the Atlantic College campus. We are also planning to approach United World Colleges in India with the idea of setting up something similar at their campus in Pune.
