Global Rights is SEEKING YOUTH PARTICIPANTS for a new program

The program will bring about 20 youth (aged 18-30) from marginalized ethnic and racial communities around the world to a meeting in New York on November 14-16, 2005 to examine poverty and discrimination from a human rights perspective. These youth will then return to their home countries and hold "town hall meetings" where they will pass on the knowledge they have acquired to other youth. We anticipate that there will be another meeting in 2006 where participants will meet with international policy makers and human rights and development experts to amplify the voices of youth at the international level. Global Rights will cover all expenses related to attending the international meetings.

The purpose of the program is:

- To develop a global movement of youth who are able to grapple with issues of poverty and discrimination from a human rights perspective;
-To amplify the voices of youth by facilitating a dialogue between young people and national and international policy makers; and
- To promote greater equity in society by ensuring that the needs of marginalized ethnic and racial communities are included in the achievement of poverty reduction plans, such as the Millennium Development Goals.

The selection criteria is as follows:

-Applicants must be aged 18-30 as of December 31, 2005.
-Applicants must be proficient in either English or Spanish.
-Applicants must belong to a racial or ethnic community that is marginalized or discriminated against (membership in this community can be self-defined).
-Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in equality, non-discrimination and social justice issues.
-Applicants must be willing to host "town hall meetings" with youth in their home countries and have the skills to recruit youth and facilitate the meetings.
-Preference will be given to applicants who are leaders or active members of organizations or movements that promote human rights or social justice.

If you would like an application package to apply to participate in this program, please send an e-mail to DiyaN@globalrights.org
