The Millennium Development Goals, Young Global Leaders Summit
Kimmel Center, New York University campus, September 10, 2005

Globally conscious students are invited to attend a one-day conference in New York City for leaders wishing to make a difference in the world. The ‘MDG Young Global Leaders Summit: Ending Poverty’ aims at helping top students develop into future leaders in the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals. The Goals are a set of development promises that the 191 member countries of the United Nations have pledged to meet by the year 2015, such as halving poverty and establishing universal education. World leaders are meeting in New York from September 14-16 for the UN World Summit, at which they will discuss the progress they have made in meeting the Goals. The Young Global Leaders Conference takes place four days earlier, and will send a powerful message to politicians that young people support the MDGs.

The Young Global Leaders Summit aims to encourage today’s youth to view the pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals as the special mission of their generation. At the summit, top university students will engage in workshops and discussions aimed at equipping them with the tools to effectively campaign and raise support for the MDGs on their campuses and in larger society. The summit will feature a series of guest speakers from NGOs and public offices, discussions with leaders in the development field, an internship fair to get students involved with organizations that need strong leaders, and workshops aimed at developing their campaigning and leadership skills. Thanks to the generous support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Open Society Institute, the Hewlett Foundation, and the DarMac Foundation, the conference is free for selected students including food and tuition (although transportation is at participants' expense). Limited free lodging on the night of September 10 is also available for students traveling from beyond the New York City area.

Interested students should send a resume and brief cover letter to apply@mdgsummit.org, or apply through our online forum (please see website for instructions at www.mdgsummit.org). Applicants needing housing on the night of September 10 should note that need in their application. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis through midnight on September 8 and applicants will be notified within 24 hours of submission if they have been selected to attend the conference. If you have any questions, email us: mdg@mdgsummit.org

Event is sponsored by Americans for an Informed Democracy (www.aidemocracy.org) and Global Justice (www.globaljusticenow.org).
