The 40th International Youth Camp (IYC)

1) The Ceremony of the 40th Anniversary of IYC
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of IYC, there will be a formal celebration both for alumni of IYC and participants in the 40th IYC. Any alumni (former participants of IYC) are more than welcome to join the camp during the period of 11th to 13th of August 2005. The efforts of alumni who have kept in touch with their IYC friends and who would encourage them to join this programme would be highly appreciated.

2) International Forum
Date: 12 August 2005 *12 August is International Youth Day, as appointed by the United Nations.
Venue: UNESCO Culture Center
Participants: 200 (Participants, former participants from previous IYC, invited guests)
Contents
- Ceremonial lecture: Intercultural exchanges among youth for peace building and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Session 1: History and outcomes of intercultural exchange among youth in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Session 2: Cases of intercultural exchange programmes for youth in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Session 3: Cases influenced by IYC in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Session 4: Voices of IYC Alumni
- Session 5: Tasks and prospects of youth intercultural exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region.

3) Cultural Exchange Programmes
Each participant will have opportunities to present and exhibit their cultures.

4) Workshop & Reporting
Participants will have the chance to attend lectures and discuss on the culture of peace. In order to prepare for their field study, they will also study and discuss their assigned subjects in groups. After coming back from the field study, participants have to report and evaluate each field trip.

5) Field Study
All participants will be divided into 7 theme groups and spend 4 days with an associated organization to do field study, as described below.

IYC-4001 / Cheorwon / The Korean Association for Bird Protection-Cheorwon Chapter

Theme: Peace and Environment.

Cooperating Organization:
The Korean Association for Bird Protection runs a Bird Sanctuary and newly established Cheorwon Ecology Center in the hope that Cheorwon can serve as a laboratory in which to study nature’s resilience and as a catalyst for building peace on the Korean peninsula.

Description of Activities:
The participants on this campsite will study and participate in the activities of Cheorwon Ecology Center. For this year in particular, participants will also have the opportunity to discuss the partition of the Korean peninsula, since the Center is located near the DMZ. Subjects that may be discussed during the field study include the Military Demarcation Line, land mines, environmental sanctuaries, war and the environment, and more.

IYC-4002 / Namyangju / Paldang Life Saving Solidarity

Theme: Making Sustainable Eco-Villages.

Cooperating Organization:
The Paldang Life Saving Solidarity organization is a local network of consumers of agricultural products in urban areas and producers in rural areas. The Network’s proposal to transform Jinjung into an ecological village has been recently accepted by Gyeonggi Province and will be realized over the next three years.

Description of Activities:
Participants will study ecology and the environment and experience ecological life. They will also assist local people to cultivate the eco-village, accomplishing direct exchange with the local society and doing many different activities.

IYC-4003 / Yangpyeong/ Batangol Art Center

Theme: Culture & Arts

Cooperating Organization:
Batangol Art Center is an artspace where performance, films and exhibitions are held. It is truly a complex cultural space where various kinds of art facilities such as a ceramics studio, crafts studio, Korean paper studio and metal-craft workshop are all under one roof, enabling people to experience different types of arts.

Description of Activities:
Participants will have the opportunity to practice various kinds of art and discuss creativity and expression through culture and the arts, and the role of arts in society. They will also search for ways to inform the public about “Youth & Change” through arts expression.

IYC-4004 / Ansan/ Ansan Migrant Shelter

Theme: Human Rights and Peace

Cooperating Organization:
The Ansan Migrant Shelter organization was established by Presbyterian Church of Korea in 1994. It supports human rights and legal and social reform for migrant workers. Many migrant workers in Korea face poor working conditions, workplace mistreatment and unsatisfactory legal status.

Description of Activities:
Participants will study the current situation and look at tasks and solutions of the migrant workers’ issues, through talking with the migrant workers and learning about their experiences.

IYC-4005 / Daejeon / Daejeon Health Sciences College

Theme: Social Welfare, Poverty and Alienation

Cooperating Organization:
The Department of Health and Welfare for the Aged in Daejeon Health Sciences College focuses on the health and welfare of the old people, one of the most important social welfare issues in our aging society.

Descriptions of Activities:
Participants will not only learn practical skills in health and welfare for the aged, but also will discuss the issue of neglected groups in society.

IYC-4006 / Daedeok / Center for People’s Participatory Research

Theme: Science and Local Community

Cooperating Organization:
The Center for People’s Participatory Research (CPPR) was established in July, 2004 by young scientists and citizens of the Daejeon area. The center is an exemple of the worldwide movement of “science shops”, grassroots organizations that answer the scientific requirements of local citizens and NGOs and help create an awareness of society’s needs. CPPR aims to identify and study activities that are closely related to the real life of local citizens such as the environment, public service, health and sanitation, education, women and children, employment and labor, social welfare and rural communities.

Description of Activities:
Participants will study the basic concepts of science and technology, the background and current situation of the science shop movement and the center’s efforts to cooperating with the local community. Participants will also have the chance to be involved in research activities of the local community and work with local volunteers.

IYC-4007 / Changnyeong / Woopo Ecosystem Education Institution

Theme: Preservation of the Environment and Sustainable Development

Cooperating Organization:
To raise awareness of the importance of sustainable development and to provide eco-tours of the wetlands for visitors and locals, Green Gyeongnam 21 is running an Educational Institution for the Woopo Ecosystem.

Description of Activities:
Based on discussions and studies on the environment and ecology, participants will do simple volunteer work on the Woopo wetlands. Participants will also have the opportunity to think about the preservation of the environment and sustainable development of the local community.
