CALL FOR PAPERS

Canadian Association of African Studies

“Health, Poverty and Development”

With special thematic sessions on HIV/Aids sponsored by CCASLS

April 21-24, 2006

Marriott Chateau Champlain

Montreal, Quebec Canada

CONFERENCE THEME:

Health, Poverty and Development, with special thematic sessions on HIV/Aids

Issues of health, poverty and development pose fundamental challenges to African citizens, scholars and policy-makers. Alone, each represents a problem of significant proportions. Together they create a complex crisis that reverberates through all aspects of society, not only undermining the social fabric but contributing to region’s marginalization, conflict and state collapse, brain drain, and a loss of significant human potential. Suggested remedies range from increased aid, debt relief, improvements in governance and democratization, peace-building, measures aimed at improving participation in trade and globalization, and much more.

Papers are sought that reflect a wide range of approaches to these issues, from historical to current perspectives, and from all related disciplines.

Papers that do not conform to the Conference’s overall theme will also be welcome; CAAS’ mandate is to promote research and enquiry into all aspects of African studies.

In addition, CCASLS (the Canadian Association of Area Studies Learned Societies) will be sponsoring a one-day workshop on HIV/Aids on 24th April 2005. CCASLS intends to bring together medical practitioners, health professionals, policy-makers, academics, development organizations and others concerned with a global crisis which is becoming more acute.

Please send all abstracts to CAAS , including those for the CCASLS workshop on HIV/Aids:

Submission Deadline: February 8th, 2006

Please visit the CAAS website for all information and Submission forms
