Engaging Young Africans in the UK: Towards Promoting Africa Development and UK Child Protection Initiative

Since Damilola Taylor and Victoria Climbie, there have been a lot of clamour for stronger child protection policies and series of advocacy to promote the protections of Young Africans in the UK both by mainstream and African organisations; nevertheless, Young Africans themselves have not effectively been involved in the advocacy to promote proper protections for African Children in the UK.
Also, over the last 5 years, there have been increase in the promotion of the participation rights of young people in Africa; nevertheless Young Africans in the Diaspora are not strongly engaged in these Development and Policy Making Process. Most African countries have introduced Children’s Parliament in their countries, thereby involving Young People in Development work from the grassroots’ level to the National Level, yet there are little or no opportunities for such participation right to be expressed for Young Africans in the Diaspora.
The levels of opportunities for young people in the Diaspora to participate have been questioned by Young Africans themselves in a survey conducted by ADYF. The survey revealed that a lot of Young People from the African and other BME communities are not involved in local projects in their local communities, Diasporic Activities and Initiative and Policy Influencing Advocacy as a whole. Community organisations and Diaspora based Charities who are working for Children and Young people are also not effectively engaging Young people in the Planning and Advocacy stage of their project. They only bring Young People into the Implementation of their activities with little or no role to play.
This conference organised by Africa Diaspora Youth Forum, the Premier organisation for Young Africans in the Diaspora will brings together Young People, policymakers, key actors and stakeholders from the public, private and civil society sectors in Africa, its Diaspora and the UK Promote the needs and opportunities of Engaging Young People. Presentations will be analytically reflective in content and geared towards Young People’s Participation, building on its successes and assessing its challenges. The Conference would also be an avenue to promote existing opportunities for Young People to participate.
The Keynote address would be delivered by Rt. Hon Tony Blair, Chair of the Commission for Africa. Other speakers includes David Bull, UNICEF Director; Beverly Hughes MP, Minister for Children, Young People and Families; and Prof. Firmino Mucavele, CEO, New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Secretariat amongst others. African Diaspora Youth Forum, Nadège Tchotchoe Royal African Society, Berni Sesay African Foundation for Development, Miama Foster Centre for African Policy and Peace Studies and Temidayo Israel-Abdulai African Diaspora Youth Forum.
The one-day conference will take place in Central London, on 15th March 2006 from 9.30am-5.00pm. A drinks reception would follow afterwards. Spaces are limited so please be sure to book your place.
