Public Seminar: Education and Sustainable Development in Alexandria:
Exploring the Possibilities.
Sunday 19th March 2006, 7-9pm, Biblioteca Alexandrina.
The Mediterranean region has a long history of trans-national activity, and yet still remains subject to conflict, and to a host of challenges which are creating increasing discrepancies in prosperity across the region, thereby potentially inhibiting progress towards sustainable development.
Alexandria, as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean', has a particularly rich history of trans-national activity, and could be seen as the centre for Euro-Mediterranean activities and efforts towards sustainable development in the MENA region. But in order for this pearl to truly shine, efforts need to be made by and on behalf of her citizens to encourage local initiatives towards sustainability.
In this seminar, Professor William Scott from The University of Bath (UK) will explore the possibilities of developing educational tools in diverse areas of Alexandrian society in order to help make the dream of sustainability a reality. Professor Scott is an international expert in Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and how these might be addressed, in educational and other institutions, at various levels of society. Representatives from various areas of Alexandrian society will then be invited to respond as to how these ideas might work in practice.
