Our Conference
“Connectivity” is an international conference, dealing closely with active young people who will meet in São Paulo, Brazil, from July 15th to July 22nd, 2006. Two thousand people from all parts of the world will come together.
Our Vision
From thinking to action – “Connectivity” aims for determined motivated and engaged young people to be brought together with projects and organisations from throughout the world. This moment of synergy is representative of “Connectivity” and characteristic of a generation that has decided to be part of shaping our society. People who are already active will benefit of each other’s experience as they meet; and people still searching for purposeful tasks in this world can be inspired.
Our Aims
We will create the space for people to exchange experience, inspire each other, and ask and work on their questions. We will be discussing the visions of youth; we want to support each other in the process of finding a way to make these goals become a reality. As well, we are aiming to strengthen already existing initiatives. The network that will come out of this will interconnect dedicated youth and organisations along with innovative projects even beyond the timely boundaries of the “Connectivity” conference, and exist far into the future.
The coming together of people of different origins, religions and cultural backgrounds broadens each individual’s personal horizon and view of the world. Thinking about and questioning those factors creates understanding, and if necessary, tolerance as well as a feeling of one’s own responsibility relating to our global situation. We cannot relate identity to only nationalities anymore, but we also have to see each person as a world citizen. “Connectivity” aids the broadening of horizons/view points, the gaining of a global awareness, as well as the building of our own identity in this world.
The Realization
Keeping to our motto “from thinking to action”, we give opportunities to be active already before, during and after the conference, as one wishes. This can be on the action day during the week of conference or in one of the 2-3 week long work camps that we offer.
During the conference there will be lectures and workshops, led by individuals with global perspectives that support our conference and its successful outcomes. Nicanor Perlas (winner of the “Right Livelihood Award 2003), Ute Craemer (founder of the “Association Monte Azul”) and Fernando Meirelles (Producer of the movie “City of God”) and Julia Butterfly Hill (founder of the organization “Circle of Life”) are among the individuals that are coming to our conference.
More about the actual steps of the realization on the next few pages.
II. The concrete Realisation
1. The Context
Location and Date
The Connectivity conference is taking place from July 15 to July 22 in São Paulo, Brazil. The location of the event is the Senaci University in Sao Paolo
The main languages at the conference will be English and Portuguese. The lectures will be directly translated into German and other languages, as needed.
2. Procedure
Structure of the Day
Every day in the morning, lectures will be held - alternatively by younger and older people, women and men. Afterwards there will be discussions in smaller groups. Around noon there will be a long lunch break. There will be time for various recreational activities. As well, there will be time and space for initiatives of the participants. Following this, there will be workshops, some of which will work towards the action day. Our main focus in the evenings will be cultural exchange. We are especially looking for our participants from all over the world to participate at this time, on an “open stage”, sharing such things as music, artistic presentations, etc.
Action day
Some of the workshops and discussion groups will specifically be aiming at finding an idea/initiative to put into action on the second last day of the conference. To do this, they will be leaving the conference facilities to go to São Paulo. There, the participants will do whatever creative ideas they have had during the week. We are expecting this to be as diverse as the mixture of youth participating. This could include artistic presentations, public discussions, clean up groups, etc.
Marketplace
At the Senac University will be a space especially given to organisations and initiatives to present their projects and work. Many organisations with socially progressive, environmental and youth related targets are invited to present themselves and their work at the conference. Provided will be the necessary facilities to access a search engine for direct research on certain speakers/participants and organisations.
Work-camps
These will be held before and after the conference. There are about 20 different possibilities of work camps; each will be 3 weeks long. Participants of the conference can do hands-on help in São Paulo, helping to renovate and even build housing for schools, kindergartens, homes for the disabled, and many other social facilities, institutions for homeless children. Existing social facilities will be open (as far as the language barrier allows it) for participants to help and work directly with children, youth, under privileged people and disabled.
These work-camp groups will be comprised of Brazilian youth, as well as many individuals as possible from Europe, the Americas and other places of the world.
