The Youth Forum organising committee would like to invite you to participate in the Coastal
Zone Canada Youth Forum in Tuktoyaktuk, in Canada’s Western Arctic, August 12-13, 2006.
The Youth Forum in Tuktoyaktuk will be an exciting opportunity to exchange ideas and learn
about new and emerging ways to manage and adapt to coastal change. The theme of this
year’s conference is “change and sustainability in Arctic coastal communities” and Participants
will be considering how livelihoods depend on the coast, from research, to hunting and fishing,
to shipping and travel routes. We will look at how The Coastal Zone Canada 2006 Youth Forum promises to be an exciting opportunity for youth from
across the North and around the world to share knowledge, skills, and experiences, and learn from
each other. From trips into the scenic arctic landscape, to discussions fuelled by your own ideas and
projects, this is an opportunity of a lifetime.
You will arrive in Tuktoyaktuk on Friday, August 11, to be welcomed and guided on a walking tour
of the community. In the evening, there will be a dinner and the Forum kick-off, followed by a
variety of activities. A dance will allow all participants to get better acquainted, a hike will be
offered for the more adventurous, and movies will be available for those who would like to relax
before the presentations and discussions on Saturday and Sunday.
The first full day of the Youth Forum will begin with breakfast and a poster session. Then a keynote
speaker will get the day started, followed by discussion groups. The afternoon is when you will get
to shine as we begin our specialized breakout sessions on change, sustainability, and livelihoods.
You will share your project and ideas with other participants, and compare experiences, challenges,
and solutions. Later in the afternoon, we’ll take a break from the sessions, and you’ll have a chance
to stretch your legs as we all take part in community activities such as checking fishnets and making
dry fish, participating in arctic sports, and a drum-dancing workshop. The evening will give you the
chance to witness the beauty of the Far North: canoeing, hiking, crafting, and other activities. The
night will end after we get together for a dance on the beach with the whole community.
The second day again begins with breakfast, a poster session, and the day’s keynote speaker,
followed by discussions. The afternoon with continue with presentations and discussion, which
allow everyone a chance to be heard and share ideas and experiences. The evening will see the
conclusion of the forum as we draw our final thoughts together on the future of coastal sustainability.
We will feast and have our closing ceremonies, including special guest, Susan Aglukark! The night
will draw to a close with a jam session and movies, as participants share their thoughts and
perspectives with new friends and colleagues.
But it’s not over yet! On Monday, we can thank our hosts in Tuktoyaktuk with a day of fun activities
that the whole community can join in. The morning will start when we all pitch in help to keep our
world and their home a little cleaner, with a Beach Sweep to clean the area around Tuk of trash.
Then there will be a chance to share with the residents of Tuktoyaktuk what you learned over the
weekend, and what this Forum has meant to you as a participant. We’ll have a community barbeque,
some games and activities for the kids of Tuk, and you’ll be able to tour community members
through the poster session and trade show.
Some Youth Forum participants will also share the Youth Forum experience with the participants of
the Coastal Zone Conference, which starts on Monday evening, to let them know what the Youth see
for the future of coastlines in Canada and around the world.
You will then bid adieu to Tuktoyaktuk, and be taken back to the airport for charters back to
Edmonton, Inuvik, Aklavik, Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk, and Sachs Harbour. The insights and experiences
will stay with you long after the distinctive skyline of Tuktoyaktuk pingos has faded from sight. |
