Name of the Open Forum: E-MAIL POST OFFICE
Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
My open forum is called "e-mail post office" and works
exactly like the post office only that it's accelerated by the use of Internet (e-mail). I would like to mobilize the youths who are computer literate in Siaya district to come together and use the e-mail facility at ugunja community resource centre (www.ugunja.org) to help aged people and those who are not privileged to have access to computers in the community to use Internet, especially e-mail for communication with friends and relatives around the world.
I wish to create for each and every household an e mail address and subscribe them to a special mailing list and SMS system for updates on developmental issues.
Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
The use of Internet in rural Kenya is very low due to several reasons e.g. lack of awareness among the rural residents, no electricity, few or no Internet cafes, attitude and fear among others.
Most rural residents in many parts of Kenya are old people, many of whom still rely on the old means of sending and receiving information including the post office and messengers. I wish to transform this by giving the majority of users of old communication methods a taste of advancing technologies and new ways i.e. the use of e-mail. Computer literacy is not mandatory.
Ugunja community resource centre is an NGO that is committed to giving youths a chance to have access to technology. As a result many youths are now computer literate but the vast majority of the aged are not. Therefore it will mobilising the youths to share their knowledge is timely and a necessity.
Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding this Open Forum for youth in the community:
1. use of email for communication.
2. encourage and sensitize Internet use among the community members.
3. give the aged a chance to use modern communication technology assisted by the youths who are computer literate.
4. at least each home in siaya district to have an email address and someone trained
on how to use it.
5. To have a database of homes and their contacts including e-mail addresses
and phone numbers. I will subscribe them to a mailing list and an SMS system
aimed at addressing issues that affect community members like HIV/Aids, STIs, Poverty, improved agriculture, news and events in the district.
6. Increased business for cyber cafe owners, who are mostly youths.
