DetailsAbout
Name of the Open Forum: Russia's Accession to WTO: prospects and challenges

Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
YOUNG people will be looking at how Russia can benefit from its accession to the World Trade Organisation as part of a global campaign to reduce poverty. The event will connect by a video-link participants in Moscow, London, Washington DC and Hong Kong. Oxfam senior trade policy adviser Liz Stuart will join the videoconference from Hong Kong to explain live what is happening at WTO Ministerial summit and what are the demands and expectations of “Global Call to Action Against Poverty” from Hong Kong meeting.

Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
The forum is taking place on December 12, 2005 in the World Bank Moscow Office. These days, on the eve of WTO ministerial summit in Hong Kong, GCAP coalitions in almost 70 countries are acting together to put pressure on world leaders to do more to eliminate poverty and in particular to come up with fair trade regulations that take into account interests of the developing nations. As Russia prepares itself to become a member of WTO, it is essential that Russian people, and especially youth, learn about the implications of this process. What challenges and prospects does the membership offer?

Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding
this Open Forum for youth in the community:

The idea is to let young people from UK and Russia learn and exchange opinions about how changes in world trade might make a difference to people’s lives.

Language in which the Open Forum will be held: Russian
