Name of the Open Forum: Youth and Reproductive health
Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
The reproductive health-related knowledge, attitude and behaviors of young adults at- risk;
Awareness about the risk of AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (severity and susceptibility);
The merits of abstinence, monogamy, condom use, and other contraceptives (benefits).
How to make condoms available in youth-friendly outlets, at an affordable price, and conduct educational campaign to reduce the stigma associated with condom use and to reduce shyness about buying condoms (barriers).
How to use peer educators and condom-use demonstrations to give youth the confidence that they can take action to prevent health problems (self-efficacy).
Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
In Ethiopia while sexual activity among adolescents is high, contraceptive use (especially condom use) remains low, subsequently leading to high levels of HIV/AIDS infection and induced abortion. The negative perceptions that associate provision of contraceptive information with promiscuity and increased sexuality are a major obstacle to adolescent contraceptive use.
Many parents in Ethiopia are still uncomfortable in discussing sensitive issues such as adolescent sexual activity even if they have the knowledge. There are also significant gaps in knowledge and understanding between those implementing programs for young people and their target audience.
Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding
this Open Forum for youth in the community:
a)Improve young people's awareness of the risks of sexual activity and the benefits of protecting themselves from AIDS;
b)Increase young people's confidence that they can act to prevent reproductive health problems;
c)Increase awareness that condoms can prevent AIDS and unwanted pregnancy;
d)Cause a delay in young people's onset of sexual activity;
e)Reduce some of the barriers to using condoms, such as reluctance to propose condom use with partners and shyness about buying condoms in public.
Language in which the Open Forum will be held: Tigrigna |
