Name of the Open Forum: Open Forum: MDGs and Youth
Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
• The participants will learn about the UN millennium initiative and the 8 development goals.
• The participants will discuss the relevance of the goals to Russia and decide on the most crucial development issues as of the present.
• The participants will brainstorm on the possible solutions to the issues that can be implemented on the national and local levels.
Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
Although the year 2005 is thought to be crucial for reviewing intermediate results on the way to achieve the globally set Millennium Development Goals and much is being spoken concerning the effort the participating countries have been devoting to secure sustainable development, youth awareness on the topic is still very limited in Russia. This is particularly true for school students, whose history lessons often do not embrace the latest years in the context of global historical development. The UN Millennium Campaign may be widely discussed by scholars, diplomats, representatives of the Government and prominent third-sector leaders, yet little initiative is visible on the side of local communities. We think it drastically important to raise awareness of the global issues and their relevance to Russia among local youth, especially school students, who often have little access to information and modern communication services, e.g. the Internet.
Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding this Open Forum for youth in the community:
This Open Forum will be held as a part of the annual student scientific conference at school #21. The students who graduate from this school have long been highly competitive in such subject areas as history, politology, and law, so the OF topic goes in accord with their main areas of study. My utmost goal is to raise awareness among the local youth on the value of MDGs and the encourage them to conduct more research and acquire more knowledge in this field. In one or two years these students will be entering universities, many of them - majoring in politology, history, or international relations, so I aim this event to become a motivator for deeper exploration of the discussed issues which may result in the students' choice of the field of their future professional expertise.
