DetailsAbout
Name of the Open Forum: The Right to Be Heard - National Child Day

Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
National Child Day, an annual initiative of the Canadian Government, marks the anniversary of the UN adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The 13th National Child Day will occur on November 20, 2006. It will focus, from among the rights outlined in the Convention, on the “The Right to Be Heard”.

In partnership with Heritage Canada, TakingITGlobal will implement a national scale youth engagement effort focused on the theme “The Right to be Heard”.

The Open Forums will occur in advance of or on National Child Day and serve as an offline, community level discussion forum, as well as a means of promotion for the national Live Chats on November 20. It was agreed that both the Live Chats and the Open Forums would include invited guest experts as resources persons for the discussions, in addition to TakingITGlobal staff as the French and English language facilitators.

Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
To promote the rights of children.

Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding
this Open Forum for youth in the community:

The Live Chats and Open Forums will serve to increase Canadian children’s awareness of their rights, and more particularly of their right to be heard as defined in Article 12 of the Convention. The Forums also aim to enable their participation in a national event and channel their local perspectives to decision-makers at local level and officials at Heritage Canada.
Finally, the Open Forums will serve as a means of promotion for the national Live Chats involving children and co-facilitated by a designated TIG coordinator and expert.

Language in which the Open Forum will be held: English
