DetailsAbout
Name of the Open Forum: Young and Homeless: Open Forum for Youth

Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
In this open forum I would like participants to focus on the gap in services for youth ages 16 - 19 in the Yellowknife region. I would like participants to reflect on what the contributors to youth homelessness, the services that are currently available for youth this age, and the barriers that prevent youth from accessing the services. I would also like to brainstorm a list of suggestions to improve existing services to make them more youth-friendly and accessible.

Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
I feel it is necessary for young people to talk about youth homelessness and the limited options available because it seems that there is a gap in services for youth ages 16-18. On the day of their 16th birthday, a young person is no longer protected by Child Protection. However, they are unable to access Income Support until they are 19 years old. People hardly rent apartments to young people, since they have to history of renting, no credit, and especially no income.
I think it's important for young people to get together and talk about the options available for them if they or their friends are in a situation where they have no home.

Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding
this Open Forum for youth in the community:

I hope to get young people talking about youth homelessness in our city. I would like people to reflect on the many reasons a young person may find themselves without a safe place to stay and I would hope that this discussion will foster non-judgemental empathy for their peers. I hope that we will come up with suggestions of existing services, and we will present our suggestions to these organizations. I also would like the group to come up with ideas on how to tackle this big problem (eg, putting pressure on our govenment).
