DetailsAbout
Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:

Child Rights Awareness and Adherence
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, ILO Conventions 182 which bans the worst forms of child labour, 138 which sets the minimum age for labour, articles of the Liberian Constitution which guarantee the rights of the child, and the domesticating of these international acclaimed child rights protocols which Liberia is a signatory.

Rationale for holding this Open Forum:

The Ricks Community in Virginia, just 20-minute drive from Monrovia (the capital of Liberia) is ideally suited for hosting the forum on the above thematic issues due to ignorance on the part of children and young people. This ignorance is largely contributing to the increasing violations on the rights of children and young people in the community.

Children and young people are not doing much in pressing for their rights. They are not bringing to book those who violate their rights. Additionally, they are not abreast of major child rights protocols, which the Liberian Government has ratified. The forum will encourage them up to demand their rights in a non-violent but firmed manner. This will be the first of such forum to be held in the community.

Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding this Open Forum for youth in the community:

>To provide an opportunity for children and young people to discuss issues relating to their rights.
>To build the self esteem of children and young people in campaigning for their rights.
>To establish a network of children and young people to serve as peer educators on child rights awareness and protection.
>To share experiences on child rights violations analyze and document lessons learnt.
