c'est finnit - Posted By: Renata Florentino
so, today is really the last day of IYP. Lots of lessons, lots of ideas, and, sure, lots of work to do. Untill now, I have no idea were I'm going to pass my lasts nights in Sydney, but, as everithing in my life, I'm sure it will be solved at the amazing lasts 30seconds of the deadleines, as Calvin and Hobbes teached me...
I would like to say, for those that were in IYP, that, more than networking, we could start some friendships, that are so more important than just change our cards...
And, American delegates: Let's work on our collective plan!
|
Direct from OZ - Part 3 - Posted By: Mateus Fernandes
It's been too exciting today!!
Today, many ideas about many issues...
Imagine if the whole american continent could create a collective action plan, focused on Solidarity and Cooperation, based on Communication processes and Collective Actions, to happen during all the next 2 years. Imagine now 70 people commited to this idea, implementing a website and a publication to share visions, ideas and successful actions about their individual and collective action plans.
All these could come true in a few hours.
We're going to make right now the 4th america's regional meeting. Let's see the real (em)power of these young leaders.
But, following a chinese remind: "Be prepared for the worst, expect the best and receive the reality"
ps. The speach was pretty good. I think people have enjoyed. Some of them came to me, to thank me for the inspiring words...It's nice, isn't it? :)

Speach at the Join Section - Posted By: Mateus Fernandes
I'm going to make a speach at the join section, for the delegates of IYP. What amazing opportunity!! I'm very excited...
You're the first ones who are going to be able to read it, ok?!
:)
I'll try to post something about it after...
See ya!
I’m supposed to be here to talk to you about “lack of spaces for youth voices be heard”.
I know some of you know that it’s a real problem nowadays. But all that I want is a solution for this problem.
All of us want to be heard. How can we improve our actions to build a place where youth voices, as all the other voices, can be heard. And, more than that, can be respected and expected. So, in stead of talking about the problems, I would like to talk about some solutions. Let’s see the positive aspects. Let’s feel the positive vibration.
Well, I’ve been participating all these days of the Action Area Group called “Youth Culture and Empowerment”.
It was a great opportunity to listen to creative and powerful solutions for the problem of the lack of spaces.
I will try, in the next three minutes, to summarize the discussions, and solutions, of our group.
I can see three different points of view, a hundred of different solutions, thousands of different possibilities to act.
The fist of them is about ART. But we can say its about BODY EXPRESSION, CULTURAL ACTIVITIES…
When young people use their bodies, their culture, to express themselves and their views of the whole society, I’m sure they can create powerful spaces, where the youth voices can be heard. And, moreover, young people are an important part of society that, using their bodies and expressions, attract adults, children and other young people to enjoy with them. When young people learn about their culture, they can better use it to be heard. When young people test their own limits (I’m talking about body limits), they too can better know the limits in general, of the society as a whole.
The second idea is about CENTERS. When we create, and support, youth centers, we can better understand our needs and our possibilities to act for a social and positive change. When young people can meet, looking into each other’s eyes, they can be much more respectful for the human being in general and more organized as a social group. If we can organize ourselves, I’m sure, nobody can stop from listening to us. If we organize, we can have a better idea about what we should say. And then, they (the ones who are not listening to us now) will respect us, because we have a huge voice and strong and useful ideas.
The last, but not least, solution is about NETWORKING. Implementing powerful tools to improve the communication and the sharing of ideas is something that can be a creative solution if you want to be heard. And, if you want to help other young people to be listened to.
Why?
Young people can understand young people better than anyone else.
We have the same spirit, although the parents of our parents have created geographical barriers.
We have the same problems, although our governments insist in treating us differently in different countries.
We all have the same power to change the society, in spite of the fact that the society itself, sometimes, doesn’t know this.
But we need to be connected to turn all these feelings into reality.
So, I hope I could have, more than just inspired you or talked about problems, shown some possible and real solutions for our most important need: the need to be heard when we’re being affected by those, and others, problems.
Where are these solutions?
Just look around you. They are all here, at this place, at this time. And they will always be besides us, if we want to.

Updates from UK IYP People - David - Posted By: Lloyd Russell-Moyle
David Robert Taylor – People and Planet (UKYP)
Yesterday was a short day intros of the conference as the afternoon was spent in the city we went to the zoo we and dinner and it was just a wonderful evening and had a great time in a little pub. WE then went on to a Latino club, was pretty good but very tiring.
During the conference I ran a workshop on global week in action on trade justice which will be part of my action plan. I am here primarily to form my action plan on an international aspect so will be able to make international links. I’ve been able to make contact with members of the some group as me and work with them. Now I have made contacts with other delegates though it’s workshop
Global week kin action is a week in April 2005 were this message of fair trade will be taken to the leaders of the world that message is
* NO to the rich and powerful imposing unjust trade agreements, indiscriminate liberalisation and privatisation on the poor.
* YES to everyone’s right to food, a livelihood, water, health and education
That’s DRT for IYP news over and out, back to people in the studio.

Ola amigos, namorada, pai e mae!
So pra ilustrar a minha felicidade, segue uma fotinha ai...

UK Delegate Update - Lloyd Russell-Moyle - Posted By: Lloyd Russell-Moyle
LLOYD RUSSELL-MOYLE - THE WOODCRAFT FOLK
Thursday 8th July.
Well we are almost half way though the sitting, hasn’t it gone fast! I am shattered, the man had to come and wake us up today and I completely missed my breakfast, DAM, on the up side I missed the warm up or the majority of it (the facilitator did try to keep making us get up and be active, us UK delegate were too tiered and Reserve!?!? To take part we sat and laughed at the back. Why can’t we just get on instead of bursting in to movement every second.). At the joint sitting it was the most inspiring speech, it was on the Topic of Local to Global and the speaker was Eileen Pittaway, she and her organization from Australia have forget and been successful in lobbying the UN. She spoke how if a woman was raped she wasn’t eligible for asylum as the UK judge who set the president said that Rape was the ‘normal course of a women’s life’. They managed to lobby and persuade the leaders first of all to see it as an issue putting it on the agenda. The world leaders agreed not only to grant refugee status to those women but rape is not a crime against humanity the highest crime possible. What a success (male rape has always been counted as physical abuse) She talked about how to get around the UN process followed by a session of questions.
A quick break for tea and in to our action groups, in both sessions today I’ve been working harder on my action plan talking to others about it and we have been working out what and how we can improve them, sharing skills and ideas it is really useful. After Afternoon tea we had an action sharing session where we went to each other action group to find out what was happening. For the last session I was helping with the sustainability one and we had a discussion about sustainability and the way to reach it and if it was possible.
It was a really good discussion with people really bring theory of politics and the environment into play to try and debate how we must go about education about sustainable development and the challenges we face.
Dinner soon followed and I went to type some of David Diaries up and start finishing off my own LSP working group work for the Local Council, I have found that I have been so bogged down with work while I have been over here. I have really enjoyed it but it has been really non-stop, I feel like I have lived in Sydney for years not weeks.
Finished typing around 11 and went to the common room when I worked on my action plan till about 1230 when the music started blearing so David, myself, and Helen went out side to join the others in some stretching and just talking. Talked about random things (the state of public transept and fair trade to name a few) in to the wee hours of the night and at about 230/3am I went to bed leaving David and company talking.
Blue Skies (well I whish it would be)

I am simply having a wonderful time this week at the International Youth Parliament here in Sydney. I've been to a lot of youth conferences over the last few years, and I think this is the best! I arrived on Sunday, and it feels like I've been here for weeks. After a quick tour of the venue, the huge St Joseph's College, I practiced my navigation skills and started giving the tours myself for groups of delegates! From that point on, it's been an intensive time of facilitation, workshops, meetings, highly engaging conversations, meeting up with old friends, and gaining new ideas.
The opening session on Monday at the Sydney town hall was well choreographed - if a bit slow to get started - and incorporated a call-to-action from the Premier of New South Wales, an relatively unmemorable speech from a distinguished and personally inspiring indigenous leader Pat Dodson, and an incredibly moving address by Stanley Simpson, IYP2000 delegate from Fiji. I came to this conference thinking I was mainly here to facilitate and develop partnerships for TIG, in a very mechanical sort of way. But Stanley's speech reminded me of why I am here really - to connect with and learn from an incredible group of people fighting for human rights and social justice against all odds, and from very diverse backgrounds. Thanks Stanley, you are a true leader.
I'm facilitating one of the two Education Action Areas, which is a group of 30 youth coming from places from Jordan to Indonesia looking at creating relevant, innovative informal education initiatives - such as training programs for young women in India, to advocacy efforts to in Papua New Guinea. It's been great working with Ethan, Liz, and Kimberly on the facilitation team, and we've been having fun coming up with games and exercises which draw connections with the issues and get people collaborating - as well as the more intensive breakout groups. Tomorrow we'll start one-on-one mentorship with the group, which should really help people concretize their ideas.
Last night we were packed onto buses and driven to the new National Institute for Dramatic Arts theatre. The trip itself was a pleasure, chatting to several more of the delegates from the UK I hadn't already met. Is it just coincidence, or is everyone from the UK really great?
The performance blew me away. Architected by famous Canadian group Cirque Du Soleil, it brought together six performance groups from around the world (Brazil, Paris, Aboriginal Australia, Chile, South Africa, Montreal) - youth from marginalized communities who used dance, song, hip-hop and circus to express themselves... powerful cultural action. Hugely professional, very inspiring, highly entertaining, it got us all into a great mood. The performers are joining us from tomorrow as IYP delegates and I can't wait to talk to them about their experience putting together the show over the last three weeks. Again, very impressive!
Today things are picking up speed. I took time out this morning to have breakfast down the road (as much as it is wonderful, I needed to get out of IYP for an hour). And then after our Action Area Group in the morning, I presented a workshop, twice, on Networking and Partnerships. It was a bit nerve racking, especially as people were slow to arrive... but we soon got a very good crowd and the feedback on my evaluation forms was excellent, which I'm so glad about. These people deserve the best.
In between the two sessions, Rohan and I chatted to Mwena, a delegate from Nigeria. He lives two hours+ travelling away from the local internet cafe, which he can't afford anyway at $2.50/hour. Right now he lives in a rural village, and runs the hospital for the region (110,000 people). In fact, he is the only doctor. Turns out that while he is here in Australia, the region basically has no health care system. With a smile, he said he can't wait to get back, "because soon the community will start crying", and "because the weather is terrible here!".
It's been great catching up with many old friends and making new ones. To sum up, wonderful.

UPDATE FROM SOME OF THE UK DELEGATES TO THE IYP - Posted By: Lloyd Russell-Moyle
Umar Kankiya - UK Youth Parliament and Newham Youth Parliament
(Diary Extracts)
Day 3
Up at 7:15am this morning, I seem to have shaken off the jetlag which is cool. As per usual the day starts with breakfast and then between 8:45 and 11 we had the first joint siting (this is where everyone from all action groups come together for a plenary session) to listen to an invited speaker.
The first speaker was a guy called James who spoke quite well although he didn’t seem to be able to stick to the point and I become lost during his speech a few times. The second speaker was a guy called Patrick who was at the first OIYP in 2000 and his action plan was to create a African Youth Parliament which is not in action with over 160 delegates form over 4o different African Countries, this fantastic achievement cheered me right up.
The final speaker, a woman called Linda Kelly gave a slightly negative speech which highlighted 7 points about who to evaluate your work. It was about what to do to make sure that your action plan works in practice. But by the end of the speech everything she had said seemed so negative, it was a bit of a downer and made me feel like I should go and pack my bags now and go home.
Following the joint sitting we went into our action groups in which we discussed the morning process and people viewing different opinions about the last session. I talked about how the negative nature of the speech and the impact it had on me. Lunch followed and then we went back into our action groups in which we did a diagram each breaking down our action plans and describing in the session how they can work
I meet this guy called Andrew from Swaziland who is trying to set up a Youth Parliament in his country, he is someone that I will hook up with and help out with though the week. We then went into our regional meetings for Europe. It was a great session with most European nations represented event the Swiss decided to turn up, It your heart out EC!!!
Dinner proceeded and then it was off to the NIDA (National Dance and Acting School) theatre in Sydney for a performance put on by Cirque cho sole, rap groups, singers from around the world, a clown and an aboriginal performance. It was fantastic night with lost of color, excitement. It was a wicked night to be had watching people form around the world put on a fantastic show for us. (The free Champaign was a bonus too!!)
Following hat we headed back to St Joseph’s and went off to bed
Until tomorrow
Peace out

LLOYD RUSSELL-MOYLE - The Woodcraft folk (& UKYP)
"Wakie Wakie rise a shine, you'll hate meat the end of the week" one of the workers says laughing,
At 5:40 we were up, and as it transpires for no reason what so ever, we wern't need until 9:30 in Sydney Town Hall which is only half an our away but the times got mixed up. At the Townhall there was singing and opening session, the premier of New South Wales was there and spoke of a new world that we must create one in which conflict is resolved though cooperation and not War, he said about the environment and the how we need a sustainable future.
After a couple of other speech's the talking was over and the moving, and planting was just beginning, every country was given a tree which they presented to the stage with applause of all the other delegates every time.
On our way back I was interviewed by the Guardian/Observer about my action plan which is regarding Sustainable education and so am there for the UK Delegate in Sustainable development Action group. It is as David put it inspiring meeting others who are doing such great things international on these topics which we have been working on today.
All has been going well until Dinner struck and NESTLE ICE CREAM and COFFEE, not standing for any nonsense, David went off to complain while i whipped up a poster for the coffee machine and Ice cream asking people not to eat/drink the products and the reasons.
Oxfam who have hired out side caters went down to the shops and got some fair trade stuff, Oxfam to the rescue.
Hopefully this wont happen again, I was surprised to be told that the NESTLE campaign its really known here as it is in the UK. Also Fair trade and Organic is much harder to come by they are it seems 10 years behind the UK on these issues, well we can do our best to change and educate.
Tomorrow David does a work shop for Delegates about Fair Trade see his web site www.april2005.org
Thats all for today.
Yours
Blue Skies

DAVID ROBERT TALYOR - People and Plant (& UKYP)
The delegates filled the Sydney Town Hall for the opening ceremony, which was immensely enjoyable, with every nation even a reputes applause after this we dividing in to our action areas. IYP is focused around the development of action plans mine is on fair trade and so i have been allocated to the labour and employment action area. Meeting the other delegates was very inspiring with delegates form Cambodia, Turkmenistan and Nepal running projects fighting for workers rights and employment for young people.

(Diary Extracts)
Day 2
I was up at 6:15am yes you read correctly 6:15am. After ending a long flight the night before we woke up (or where worked up) at this ungodly hour but hay I survived. The reasons for the early start was due to the fact that we where going to Sydney Town hall to conduct the opening Ceremony for the IYP. On the lawn whilst weighting for the bus with our little sign saying the UNITED KINGDOM we where chatting and meeting all the UK delegates. We arrived at the Town Hall and had a mass Photo shoot before going i. Inside the New South Wales Premier greeted us along with other leading figures in Australia from all different communities.
A tree ceremony was then conducted during this opening in which each county was given a small tree which will be planed in schools across NSW to symbolize the IYP. On a side note the Iraqi delegate got a fantastic reception the applauding was fantastic for this lone delegate.
With the ceremony over, it was time to go beck to St Joseph’s for Lunch then in to our actions pal groups. This session was for us to get to know the other people from around the world who are doing similar things and I would be working with for the next week and hopefully the next two years.
It was a very interesting session, the 3 hours flew by but it was interesting meeting people form Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Nepal, France, Angola and nay more places from around the world. What a huge and wide range of people to have met I’m looking forward to getting to know them more as the days go on.
Dinnertime was as usual eventful, I ended up talking with a couple of Ladies form Australia as well as my already established friends form Trinidad and South Africa. The eveing was out time to Chill and I ended up with a few girls from Fiji getting to know each other and talking until 11:30pm when I was off to bed.
Uphill tomorrow.
Peace Out

Marie, do Canada. Kennedy, das Ilhas Salomao...
Muitas pessoas, muitas ideais, muita inspiracao.
Por hora, eh so.
Mas, fica a pergunta.
QUAL O MUNDO MELHOR QUE QUEREMOS? E QUAIS SAO OS NOVOS LIDERES PARA ESSE MUNDO?

Today we finally celebrate de oficial begining of the IYP 2004. Yesterday we have participated on a spiritual ritual called Smoking Cerimony. It`s amazing and intense. The only problem is that most people was not 'connected' to the cerimony...But, for me, it`s very significant.
Today we could se 'the hole' parliament. Very, very beautiful. It`s strange and gorgeous when you can see people from different parts of the world listening together to the same music, seeing the same ritual, feeling distincts but harmonious feelings.
THERE IS A CHANCE. AND WE COULD BE PART OF IT!
Today in the evening (in a few minutes, in fact) we will start the Action Area Groups. As I told you, I`m part of the YOUTH CULTURE AND EMPOWERMENT Group.
Let`s see and contribute.
I`ll post more in the end of the day.

Umar Kankiya - UK Youth Parliament and Newham Youth Parliament
(Diary Extracts)
Day 1
Arrived in Sydney at 6:30 am Local time. I was very shattered after flying for 21 hours plus 3 hours stop off in Dubai. Arriving at the international Youth Parliament I meet quite a few people who had arrived around the same time as me. I managed to get some brekkie and was transported to the Oxfam office in Sydney so could chill out for a few hours whilst St Joseph’s College was being prepared for our arrival. I was asked to come along to the Sydney Opera House to be part of the IYP photo shoot promoting the IYP. All I can say is that Sydney harbor look fantastic on such a beautiful and warm day.
We got back to the office and after lunch was transported to St Joseph’s where the IYP is being held, and registration had started. I was able to meet a whole load of Young people form all over the world. We had dinner, which was a very lively affair with jokes being shared and generally getting to know other Young people. The evening continued with an aboriginal ceremony, at which an elder came and performed a smoking ceremony to get rid of all the bad sprits.
Once this concluded I went to my room and crashed out.
More from me tomorrow.
Peace out

Hi everyone!
I`m now at the OXFAM office. 50 hours after leave home...
I`m enjoying a lot and I`ve already make some new contacts!
And good news:
Brazilian delegation is now well represented. We are in 3, me, Renata (DF) and Edson (RJ). We`re missing so much Marina (PE), Larissa (CE) and Pedro (SP). But, I think we can do a good job here. I work with Social Networks, Edson works with Communitary Development and Renata works with Politic Education. So, we can bring to discussion many different points of view. Although, I`m in the YOUTH CULTURE group, Edson is in HUMAN RIGHTS, and Renata is in EDUCATION group.
How can we bring YOUR point of view?
I`ll try to write everyday, explaining to you what`s going on. Keep in touch!
Bad news:
I lost my flight ticket on buenos aires...What a problem!!
I hope I can solve this...
Wish me luck...

Para OZ e avante!! - Posted By: Mateus Fernandes
Hoje eu recebi um email do IYP 2004 indicando favoravelmente a um possível financiamento...
De quanto eu preciso?
US$ 3.300,00!!!!

- Posted By: Martín Miguel Arias

Brazilian Delegation to the IYP 2004 - Posted By: Mateus Fernandes
Hello everybody,
I'm Mateus, delegate from Brazil. I'm exciting with this event, but not so with fundraising...I was expecting that the event can help me with the scholarship, but untill now I have no idea about how can I get the fee...
And, to make things more "exciting" (read "difficult") I'm trying hard to organize the Brazilian Delegation, to improve our strategy for funding. We are 6 delegates in Brazil, and the total amount to support the delegation is aprox. US$ 25.000!!
I have not give it up, till now...But I would like to get more information about the event, about the idea of the parliament, about the perspective of our participation and, moreover, about how the organization of iyp can support our iniciative.
All the best for us,
Mateus

Is it just for me? - Posted By: Mateus Fernandes
Olá todo mundo!
*Hi everybody!
*Who is going to finish the application form for the IYP?
*And, after that, who already has $$ (or scholarship) to go to Australia? It's one of the most expensive flights of the world (from Brazil)!
*I really would like to be there, but I'm not sure if I could go, If I could finish (today) the form...Everything seems to be so dificult...Is it just for me?
