The Pacific Youth MDG Summit will bring 60 Pacific youth leaders together in May 2005 with the aim of increasing awareness of the role of youth in the UN MDG process and designing projects for youth to implement to work towards the goals.

Main Objectives:


• Increase regional awareness of the 8 MDGs by placing youth at the forefront of educating the wider population about importance of MDGs
• Increase participation and engagement of youth in local, national and regional MDG planning and implementation process
• To promote and raise the awareness about the MDGs and what they mean to the young population of the Pacific Islands
• Promote capacity building and empowerment of young people in the region and promote the need for recognition of and investment in youth-led and youth-managed initiatives
• To promote the involvement of the young population of the Pacific in National MDGs Campaigns.
• Strengthen regional solidarity and understanding to collectively achieve the MDG targets by 2015
• Improve networks between governments, civil society, regional bodies, development agencies and young people to share information and form partnerships towards the achievement of MDGs
• Promote capacity building and empowerment of young people in the region and promote the need for recognition of and investment in youth-led and youth-managed initiatives

Specific Outputs:

• A Pacific Regional Youth MDGs Summit held from the during early March 2005
• An on-line network of young people working in MDG-related projects established by June 2005 as a follow up from the regional youth summit
• A regional youth MDGs progress report is prepared by August 2005 and to be presented to the United Nations Summit in September 2005
• Youth MDGs Action Plans prepared by the youth delegates at the regional summit to have direct linkage to the National MDG work plans for Pacific Island Countries
• Pacific Youth MDGs Declaration on the strategic role of Pacific youth in the Regional and National MDGs processes in the Pacific.
• A regional MDGs documentary to be produced featuring youth leaders actions towards achieving the MDGs.
