Specific issues that the Open Forum will focus on:
Discuss thoroughly to look at ways and means that women can participate in the national leadership. Emphasis will be made on the forthcoming parliament elections, scheduled for next April 2005.
Rationale for holding this Open Forum:
Unfortunately, women are not represented in the Somaliland parliament. There is no single female member in a parliament of a total of 162 members with two chambers, namely The House of Representatives and the House of Elders.
Contrary to the above, the national constituition gurantees the rights of women and minorities to be a part and parcel of the country's leadership.
In addition to the above, women are estimated to have 65-70% of the voting forces according to the latest municipality elections.
Goals the organizer hopes to achieve by holding this Open Forum for youth in the community:
1- Increase awareness of youth and women on their constitutional and human rights.
2- Accomodate women and minorities in their full scale participation as voters and candidates in forthcoming parliament elections.
3- Adovocate for a fair and free elections. |
